Forest fires sweeping through California

Central America News.Net
Tuesday 14th October, 2008

One person has been killed while thousands more have been evacuated from areas of forest fires in California.

Wildfires have been sweeping across California, forcing Californian governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency in some areas.

In urging residents in the way of fires to evacuate, he said high winds were causing changes in fire conditions “by the hour.”

Flames have been bearing down on residential areas in the San Fernando Valley with hot desert gusts, known as the Santa Ana, fanning the flames.

The fire broke out early Sunday but its cause is unknown.

In June and July this year, a series of about 2,000 fires raged across the state, scorching some 3,500 square kilometres of land.
