ALFONSO LISTA, Ifugao, Sept. 22 (PIA) - - The Department of Agriculture - Cordillera (DA-CAR) initiated a corn derby field day at barangay Busilac in this municipality last week attended by corn farmers and other stakeholders.
Engineer Ronan Soriano of DA-CAR explained that the activity aimed to showcase the use of National Seed Industry Council -registered hybrid corn varieties which have superior qualities to help corn farmers achieve "Masaganang ani, Mataas na Kita."
Some of the major challenges in corn production is the occurrence of pest and diseases, typhoon and drought damages due to changing climatic conditions. In this situation the farmers loss a lot of their money investing in high amount of fertilizers and pesticides but in the end they get very low yield.
"The Regional Corn Derby Project is to stimulate a public-private partnership among the stake holders and to search for the most productive and profitable corn variety in Alfonso Lista's soil and climatic condition among hybrid seed companies," Soriano said.
Six top performing hybrid companies participated in the event namely the Asian Hybrid Seed Technologies Incorporated (AHSTI), Bio-seed Research Philippines Incorporated (BRPI), Cornworld Breeding Systems Corporation (CBSC), Corteva Agriscience Incorporated (CAI), Bayer Crop Service Incorporated (BCSI) and Syngenta Philippines Incorporated (SPI).
The participating hybrid companies planted their seed varieties as entries of the derby, and personnel of DA-CAR crop computed the yield per hectare of each hybrid variety for the "Masaganang Ani Award".
The three-day activity culminated with the awarding of the "Masaganang Ani Award" winners. Syngenta Philippines Incorporated (NK8840) emerged as the champion with an estimated yield of 9,006 kilogram per hectare besting other corn varieties. It was also the "Farmers' Choice".
Corteva Agriscience Incorporated (P3585YHR) clinched as first runner-up with 8,892 kilogram per hectare estimated yield. Bioseed Research Philippines Incorporated (H102G) and Syngenta Philippines Incorporated (NK6410BtGT) faired as third runner-up and fourth runner-up respectively.
Mayor Edralin Alipio said this corn derby provided the actual performance and improvement of the seed varieties for the corn famers to decide what product they will buy for a productive harvest.
"My request to our seed producers if they can lower the prices of their seeds since it is one of the appeals of our farmers," Edralin said.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Dr. Domingo Mariano praised the initiators of the activity. "I am thankful to those who are here to support our local farmers, the most important sector and the food producers of our society," he said.
DA-CAR Regional Executive Director Cameron Odsey encouraged farmer participants to actively participate in government efforts to develop the agriculture sector in the region. (JDP/MBL- PIA CAR, Ifugao)
